Punchlists

Near the end of the job you should start keeping a list of things that need to be taken care of that you see as you inspect each day’s work. Your contractors will also keep a list known as a punchlist that he or she uses as a to-do list to get the project finished. Usually these lists consist of a number of small items or detailing jobs that are completed near the end of the work. They will often involve the work of subs so make sure you check with them before they pull out of the job site.
It’s important to take care of these things without getting crazy about them. If everyone is gone and you notice a scratch in the paint in the early morning sun that you didn’t notice before don’t panic and call the painter. Just get out the paint and touch it up yourself. Most of the punchlist items will probably be handled by your GC during a once-over day at the end of the job. Check them over with the contractor before agreeing that the job is done.
