Kitchen Materials: Glass
Glass doors, particularly on upper cabinetry give a kitchen an added source of light and provide display options. Glass is available in many finishes including modern clear safety glass, sandblasted finishes, molded finishes like ripples and other patterns, antique glass with its charming imperfections, acid-etched and many other choices. Mirrored glass can be used to expand a space visually or bring light around corners. Glass is also used as backsplash and wall-covering material providing an easy to clean and interesting surface on these vertical applications.
The many finishes available mean that using glass in doors does not necessarily mean displaying the contents of your cupboards to the world. Glass used anywhere in the home should be designed to break into very small fragments or be relatively unbreakable like laminated glass featuring a layer of plastic. Any old plate glass represents a safety problem, especially in home with children. Glass is sold and worked by specialized glass fabricators who can show you many choices and help with decision making.
