Kitchen Materials: Bamboo, A ‘Green’ Alternative
Bamboo, a form of grass, is now a mainstream material used for floors, counter tops and virtually anywhere else wood products might be used. It is a sustainable product that grows in one year and is easily renewed. With a very hard and close grain structure, bamboo is typically laminated when used as a building material or wood substitute. Because of the laminating process the bamboo is sealed with resins that impregnate the material, making it more durable and water-resistant than comparable wood products.
Bamboo can be stained and treated with various decorative finishes. It takes a high polish because of its density and makes a very nice furniture quality material choice for cabinetry, floors and counters.
