Cabinetry Drawers and Door Fronts
Doors and drawer-fronts can be overlay or inset depending on their relationship to the front cabinet edge. Inset doors require careful fitting and quality construction because there is little room for adjustment. Overlay doors fit on top of the cabinet front and are usually equipped with adjustable hinges that allow the installer to align all the doors by turning a few screws. With face frame cabinets, frames may be visible and can offer a material or color contrast to the doors. Euro-style boxes are completely covered by their doors except for a narrow gap or ‘reveal’. These reveals provide an attractive visual line for the eye to follow.
Keep in mind when choosing material, finish and door style that doors and drawer fronts are a major factor in the overall appearance of your kitchen. An expanse of overly complex doors or a radical color scheme can overwhelm the other design elements of the room. A simple clean design will serve as neutral backdrop for food and the tools in the kitchen.
