A Workstation Approach can Help You Plan Your Cabinet Needs
Plan your cabinetry needs based on the use and function of each area. Start with cabinets connecting the sink area with the refrigerator and range. These connections determine what functions and storage will be needed in those spaces. For instance, the area between a sink and a stove may hold cutting boards, knives, pots and pans and cooking utensils. The overhead storage near the stove may hold herbs and spices added during cooking, oils and other condiments and canned goods. Between the sink and the refrigerator is a food storage and prep area for cold foods. Bowls, storage containers, mixers, colanders and other food prep items may be found here.
Function gives you a model for choosing cabinets. For instance, a dedicated baking tray cabinet would be placed near the oven. By the same logic, cleaning supplies end up near the sink, dish storage near the dishwasher, etc.
